Preface by Prof. K. V. Belsare
There was a well educated couple. Both were Professors in the same college. Their difference of opinion usually lead to flared arguments. After some time husband was transfered to another town. Both lived in their new place. Initially they had good time, however, one day they had bitter argument. The husband lost his temper and slapped his wife. The lady could not take this. The same day she took a night train and went away to her mother's place. After this incidence days passed by and she received the news that her husband suffered from deadly fever. She could not decide what she ought to do. So she met the Master [Gondavelekar Maharaj]. The Master said,
"Suppose, there is a two wheeler. If one wheel goes one way and the other wheel another way then the vehicle is ruined. It is common knowledge that there is difference between man and a woman. However, for the world's drama to go on smoothly this difference is necessary. Nature has bestowed Man with the trait of Courage and generosity and so is woman bestowed with tolerance and capacity to surrender unconditionally. In drills of worldly life accepting defeat behooves the quality of tolerance. This reflects the greatness of the mind. World is a drama created by God.
It is our duty to play the role assigned to us to the best of our ability. Even if one gets a trivial role he should play it exquisitely, so that he gets the same credit as playing a big role. Begetting a child and getting the honor to be a mother is your right alone. Your husband can never ever get this. Therefore, remove from your mind the insistence of getting your rights. The real joy and satisfaction is when both live mutually loving each other."
When the lady asked, "Then what shall I do?" the Master replied, "take the first train and go to your husband. Serve him as though nothing at all happened earlier. Every morning, bow down once, and touch your head at his feet. (The Indian way of salutation to the Lord.)He will feel better."
As advised the lady went to her husband and followed the Master's instructions. In few days husband's fever came down. One day when she bowed and kept her head on his feet he started sobbing. The lady was frightened. Then the husband said to her, "My health is good. However, I behaved like an animal with you and I am feeling terribly guilty about it. You overlooked my behavior and rushed here for my sake. I have no doubt that you met some Master. I promise you that henceforth I will never do such a mistake." After some days they gave birth to a boy and with the baby the couple came to meet the Master.
Master: His Holiness Shri Brahmachaitanya Gondavelekar. Maharaj means King. It is respectful way of addressing a God Realized Saint.
